God had great plans for Mignon van Zyl. After graduating from university in 2014, Mignon had her own plans (she thought). She followed in the footsteps of other classmates pursuing an international job opportunity in order to earn money and see the world. Soon it became clear that God had a higher purpose for her. She connected with our TeachBeyond team working at one of our missional schools in a creative-access country in Southeast Asia. As Mignon began working at this school, she was amazed at how God used her in the lives of both her students and colleagues. Below is her account of the dramatic change in one colleague’s life:
Ms. Mai is married and has a young daughter. She was my local teaching assistant and so, with me in the class every day. We became friends and she shared a lot of her life with me, including her troubles at home, in her marriage, and so on. She was often tired, stressed, sad, emotional, and also often said that she was envious of us Christian teachers because we always looked so peaceful. She saw something different in the Christian teachers she was working with. God opened many doors for all of us to share Christ with her. Mai and I used to meet regularly, and I would encourage her with scripture. We all prayed for her almost every single day. After several months, she became a Christian. There was concern that she would be disowned, kicked out of her house, or thought of as crazy—typical reactions in her community and culture. Thankfully, that didn’t happen to Mai. She was instead thrilled to see that, three months later, her husband became a Christian as well!
When Mignon sensed God calling her to return to South Africa this past summer, she was eager to stay involved with TeachBeyond. Looking back, it is clear how God was preparing her for a new opportunity to have a global impact for the Kingdom. As the first-ever Mobilization Coordinator for South Africa, Mignon will be proactively recruiting South African missional educators to join the work of TeachBeyond around the world. Our prayer is that God will raise up many more missionaries from South Africa so that others like Mai will be impacted for Christ through transformational education.
