About Open Schools Worldwide
This trek will give opportunity to shine a light on the plight of at-risk children in Africa. We will raise money to make a significant impact to change the future for some of these children. Extreme poverty, neglect, dysfunctional families, abuse, abandonment, death of parents as well as malnutrition put vast numbers of children at risk. They often become street children, orphans, working children, and child-headed “families”. Through Open Schools Worldwide, an organization motivated by the love of Christ, dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty, at-risk children are given the opportunity for a basic education. Open Schools trains volunteer tutors to use a curriculum which they have specially designed to teach these disadvantaged children literacy and numeracy, and to equip them with the equivalent of a third grade education. The tutors meet with the children under a tree, in the shelter of a shack, on the edge of a dump … wherever they are found. Using these materials, they are able to provide the children with a basic education, share God’s love with them and give them hope. Open Schools always works together with local partners, such as schools, churches, missions, NGO’s, and other like-minded organizations.
For only CDN$80 or US$60, we can provide a child with an entire year of education. Our current goal for each trekker is to raise $5,000 to make a significant difference in the lives of these at-risk children through Open Schools.
