Blessed, not cursed

Korah, Ethiopia

Because she was considered cursed by her community, Habiba* lived in isolation for the first 12 years of her life. When our field staff in Ethiopia met her and she got sponsored, her life was forever changed! Read this heartwarming story shared by our Ethiopia project lead.

Habiba has attended the Korah school program for 3 years. I have witnessed significant transformation in her life.

Habiba is a 15-year-old girl with albinism (a rare genetic disorder), and until given the opportunity to be a part of the Korah school program, she was kept isolated inside her home. The community where she is living felt she must be cursed because of her differences. Her mother was afraid of what might happen to her by others in the community if she allowed her outside.

After educating the community and having her become a part of this program, Habiba’s life has truly transformed. Habiba, who once barely spoke and had no friends, is now fully engaged in a classroom. She is not only accepted in the community but now has a group of close friends. Habiba attends the mentoring program and Bible class each week, and she is a part of the baking and cooking apprenticeship program. It is amazing to see her participating in class discussions and even come to the front of the class to share her classwork!
