Love and Patience Win Over Student

Imagine being a second-grader entering a new classroom where you don’t speak the language. Your teacher and classmates will be your lifeline this year. They demonstrate love and patience to you as you adjust to a new language and culture, and your life is transformed.

This happens every year at Belize Christian Academy, which annually accepts a number of Chinese and Taiwanese children. Many spend the first year just learning English.

Andrew was one such new student. When this 9-year-old entered second grade at BCA his English was limited to “I’m fine, thank you. How are you?” in response to people asking, “How are you?”

It was not surprising when Andrew began acting out to express his frustration at not being able to communicate. He would start fights with other students and not obey his teacher. However, with the love and help of his teacher, classmates, host family, and pull-out class he has learned basic English and phonics. He can read basic stories and speak basic English. Now he has a big smile and hugs for his teachers.

Andrew is now a blessing to his school; an intelligent, warm-hearted, willing, and helpful boy.

BCA is looking for an elementary teacher for the 2017-18 school year. Click here to find out more about the school and inquire about this position.
