Open Schools Worldwide - Latin America
In Latin America and the Caribbean, far too many children are still growing up without a basic skill that changes everything: reading with understanding. Even before the pandemic, 52% of 10-year-olds were already living in learning poverty—unable to read and understand a simple text. Additionally, a regional report indicated that 4 out of 5 sixth-grade students may not achieve basic reading comprehension.
The reality is that 9.6 million school-age children and adolescents in Latin America and the Caribbean are not attending school.
That’s why Open Schools exists—a TeachBeyond ministry focused on literacy: simple, local, and safe learning spaces where vulnerable children receive support to learn to read, write, and rebuild confidence. Because when a child learns to read, they don’t just decode letters—they begin to imagine a different future.
Our mission is to reach the vulnerable through education.
And our goal for 2026 is clear: to teach 1,000 new children and equip 480 volunteers to walk alongside them on this journey.
