Guidance Counselor
The Guidance Counselor willsSupport students’ academic, spiritual, personal, and social growth by providing counseling, resources, and guidance for their educational and career development.
Responsibilities:
- Provides counseling services consistent with Christian principles, suitable in a multicultural, expatriate context, to students in the International Academy community
- Liaisons with staff to support student well-being
- Provides professional consultation and in-service to the faculty
- Provides direct/indirect parent education services
- Supports staff in the implementation of preventative programs.
Duties:
Counsel
- Provide spiritual and academic counseling:
- Guide students in learning and living the Christian faith.
- Maintain confidentiality of records of interactions with students apart from the permanent file.
- Inform the Principal of guidance-related issues as they arise
- Schedule conferences with parents as necessary to keep them informed of the student's school programs and:
- Provide opportunities for parent participation in parent education programs.
- Help parents develop realistic perceptions of their child's development in relation to the child's potential.
- Support Administration and IA Staff.
- Consult with teachers concerning the student's program and develop management strategies to meet the needs of individual students. This may include in-services on various subjects when needed.
2. Testing & Records
- Ensure ordering, administration, scoring and record-keeping of all standardized tests.
- Ensure academic and ESL evaluation and placement.
- Maintain student academic records.
- Test Score and Data Interpretation:
- Maintain a working knowledge of the testing program and interpret the results to students, family, and faculty as requested.
- Assist and work with students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data as needed.
3. College/Career Education
- Provide PSAT, SAT, and ACT materials and information for college-bound students.
- Provide career/aptitude testing (such as the ASVAB).
- Counsel and advise students regarding college applications, career paths, and interest assessment testing.
- Prepare college reference letters for students.
- Monitor the instructional program to ensure that students develop an awareness of the world.
- Serve as a resource person to faculty and students as needed.
4. Programs/Curriculum Planning
- Promote positive attitudes and awareness of the guidance programs within the school and school community.
- Take leadership in the planning and development of the guidance curriculum and program keeping in mind the needs of students.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Qualified in a relevant profession (e.g. psychology, social work, or school counseling).
- Counseling experience in schools or other suitable setting.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience working with both groups and individuals.
- Experience implementing preventive programs relevant to the school setting.
- Ability to provide educational and psychological testing.
