Beyond Inglês

Giovana (20) and Eduarda (18) are 2 sisters from our Beyond Inglês program in Brasilia, Brazil. They heard of the English program because they attend the church where classes are held. Students in this 4-year program learn all 4 language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), together with a clear resentation of the Gospel.

Beyond Inglês started in 2018 as an affordable English Center with 60 students. They had 100 by the second semester. Most students are teenagers or young adults. From the start, the program has had native English speakers from Canada and the US as teachers. “The purpose is to help students develop good English skills,” says former Director, Adriano Caires.

“We are also looking to develop partnerships and internships with North American universities,” he continues. “It has been exciting to have a graduate from the TESL program at Providence University (Manitoba, Canada) come to Brazil to teach our students. We were expecting a second Providence graduate, when Covid hit and we had to suspend our program.” Other possibilities include a partnership with Messiah University in Pennsylvania, USA. In the future, it is also hoped that students who complete the Beyond Inglês program, could then be encouraged to go on for further studies at Providence or Messiah after passing the TOEFL or IELTS (English proficiency) exams.

Currently, Giovana is studying pharmacy at college. A key verse for her is John 16:33, where Jesus says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Eduarda is making plans to attend university. She shares that 1 Cor. 15:58 has been very meaningful. Paul writes, “Stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourself fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

Please continue to pray for these 2 sisters and all the others from our Beyond Inglês program, especially as classes are still suspended. Brazil has been particularly hard hit by Covid.

Pray for Beyond Inglês

    • Pray for a new Director for Beyond Inglês. This key position needs to be filled before anything else can happen. Once Covid restrictions lift in Brazil, there will also be a need for more teachers. You can check out the full list of opportunities to serve here.
    • Pray for the much-needed renovations of the office space and 3 classrooms. Pray also for the scholarship program that makes it affordable for many or the funds to come in to move these projects forward and for more students. The Center’s quality language program is a witness for transformational education.
    • Pray for the many families affected by Covid deaths and serious illness in Brazil. Many people live in crowded conditions and lack access to good medical care and treatment. Pray for the ministry of those reaching out to them with the light and comfort of the Gospel message.
