The Surprising Strength of Weakness
Two passages in the New Testament present a distinctly Christian and surprisingly powerful paradox-when we are weak, we are strong. The origin of this strength is found not in our practice, but in God’s Presence.
“Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Rom. 8:26)
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Cor.12:9)
What if… our thorns, and not our roses; our weaknesses, and not our strengths; insults, not our blessings; hardships, not comforts; persecutions, not affirmations; our calamities and not our successes are the means by which God would bring about the transformation of our lives and the communities we serve?
The next time you are faced with something that seems to call into question all that you desire to become in Christ, do not abandon hope. In the midst of your uncertainty, pray, trusting in the work of the Holy Spirit who intercedes with groanings too deep for words and according to the will of God. His sufficient grace will enable the power of Christ to rest on you, to the end that his strength will be made perfect in you.
As an exercise, take some time this week to offer your difficulties to the Lord. Ask that his grace would be enough for you, and that the power of Christ would rest on you, transform your soul and work powerfully through you to bring transformation through the Gospel as you give testimony to everyone you meet.
