Guidance Counselor
Ready to step into a vibrant, multicultural environment? GDQ International Christian School is looking for a qualified guidance counselor to begin August 2025.
General Responsibilities:
- Assist students in the areas of academic achievement in academic, personal & social development, career exploration, and spiritual understanding and growth.
- Work with administration, teachers, parents, and the GDQ community
- Provide direct and indirect student services that includes instruction, advisement, counseling, consultation, collaboration, and referrals.
Elementary / Middle School
- Instruct students individually or in small groups at an age-appropriate level and from a biblical worldview on issues such as substance abuse, bullying, anger management, careers, depression, relationships, self-image, stress and suicide. SEL (social-emotional learning) classes are scheduled into the timetable for students K8.
- Listen to students’ concerns about academic, emotional or social problems. Help students process these concerns and plan goals and action points.
- Serve as an advocate for students at individual education planning meetings.
- Provide support to students during times of transition, stress, or trauma that impede student success.
- Share strategies that support student achievement with parents and teachers.
- Recognize and respond to student mental health needs and assist students and families seeking resources.
- Make referrals when therapy or long-term counseling is advised.
High School
- Meet individually or in small groups with every high school student (and their parents) to develop an academic and career plan.
- Assist in making annual class schedules to ensure students are enrolled in the appropriate classes.
- Assist students (and parents) with college investigation and selection, admissions and acceptance, scholarship and financial aid information and applications.
- Track progress of students to ensure fulfillment of graduation requirements.
- Assist students in preparing for college entrance exams (PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, ACT).
- Assess student abilities, interests, and achievements to help students set goals and make academic and career decisions.
- Listen to students’ concerns about academics and help students process these concerns and plan goals and action points.
- Assist high school administrators with the testing schedule and orientation for all examination proctors.
- Assist high school administrators, teachers, and parents in assessing and interpreting testing data, helping to identify areas in need of improvement.
